Instant Band Night is a party where musicians who have just met are asked to form a band and perform a song in five minutes. It was created by Jon Sung, who is a fabulously talented emcee, organizer, copywriter, AND (we were surprised to discover) violinist.

The event happens every other month in Oakland, so I went with some friends to the March IBN performance and had a blast. The basic format is something like this:

Would be performers drop their name in one of the cans labelled “Guitar”, “Bass”, “Vocals”, “Drums”, “Keyboards”, “Other”, and “Poster Artist”

The MC then draws names at random and those folks have 5 minutes to meet, come up with a band name, and write a song

Five minutes after meeting each other, the band then goes onstage and performs the song live in front of a crowd of about 100 people.

Right before each band gives their first public performance ever, the MC calls out another batch of names and keeps the cycle going smoothly throughout the night.

If you sign up as a poster artist, you work on poster art for the band that is currently on stage and show it off at the end of their performance.

<img alt="Several members of an "Instant Band" posing on stage after their performance. You can also see a hand drawn poster that says "Prague" and "Instant Band Night".
The result felt like a cross between karaoke and improv comedy. Some songs started off rough, but you could feel the band learning to work together and form a groove. The styles would vary wildly from band to band too. We heard punk, klezmer, ska, space rock, folk, and much more. Here are a few examples from throughout the night:

Instant Band Night is a bi-monthly all-ages event in Oakland. The next one is on May 9th and I highly recommend you check it out. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/instant-band-night-26-spring-fling-tickets-863940929577?aff=butts

And after undergrad, I got into the habit of buying books and perusing bookstores, which was a privilege: my justification at ~$25/book was that it wasn't too much more than a movie and would entertain/engage for much longer than 2 hours. This logic doesn't really make sense in retrospect...

What got me going back to the library again was the lovely, kind, gentle librarian Mychal on TikTok; he reminded me of *library joy* and how libraries are inclusive by design. Hearing his stories and encouragement reminded me of how libraries were my safe space as a child, and that there was no good reason they shouldn't continue being joyful, safe spaces to me today.

The closest library to me is the Jefferson Market library, which was initially a courthouse. When it was converted to a library in 1967, it was apparently one of the first adaptive reuse projects in the US. But it's a terrible thing to be toying with, in a time of disappearing Third Spaces and zealous book bans.
Bravo, bravo to Oppenheimer tonight, for its 7 wins, which included Best Picture. For me, it felt like the first time in a while that the Oscars have awarded cinematic achievement, for a movie that deserves to join the canon.

Over the summer, there were early critiques of the movie that it didn't show what happened on the other side of the bomb; that it failed by not centering the Japanese experience of the atomic bomb. While the horrific impact of the bomb in Japan should definitely be understood and felt by American audiences, I feel very strongly that it should be in the hands of a Japanese person that this pain is expressed, not Christopher Nolan. And for that, I recommend that anyone interested in the effects of the atomic bomb in Japan watch the original 1954 Godzilla.

I think to many in the US, Godzilla is seen as a cheap-thrill, tacky monster movie. This is in large part due to the way the movie was re-edited and released in the US. From J. Hoberman's Criterion essay:

In 1956, the American rights to Godzilla were acquired by Joseph E. Levine, who released it in a reedited, dubbed version titled Godzilla, King of the Monsters, which would be shown all over the world. Levine cut forty minutes from Honda’s movie, including references to Nagasaki, contaminated food, and wartime bomb shelters, and shot nearly as much new material, adding a narrative framework that provided an American perspective...[Levine didn't] seemed to grasp the implications of a Japanese movie on the subject of nuclear annihilation.

I was lucky to see the original Japanese version last week on the big screen, and was struck by how directly the movie makes its case against nuclear testing and weapons. In addition to explicit anti-nuclear dialogue, the movie considers devastated cityscapes, the agony and despair of innocents, the coming-together of Japanese communities after loss, and the ethical dilemmas of self-defense in a warring world. The movie is clearly rendered from recent emotions and images seared into the collective Japanese memory by WWII and Oppenheimer's bomb.

Screenshots:

The final line of the movie: "If nuclear testing continues, then someday, somewhere in the world, another Godzilla may appear."

---

The movie Oppenheimer has also afforded me more insight into my personal family experience; though my family is Taiwanese, my grandfather spent the first 18 years of his life in Japan. After discussing the movie with him, I learned he was in Tokyo when the atomic bombs fell in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which I never knew before. We asked him what he remembers of the time, and he described an image he'll never forget from the front page the next day: a man sitting in a car with his arm raised to the ceiling handle, frozen in place by the blast.

I agree with the sentiment of Oppenheimer's critics, and believe that we should all seek out more information about those harmed by the devastation of war, and do everything we can to stop occupation and genocide, the use of weapons of mass destruction, war in all forms.

Anyone intending to embark on a major work should be lenient with himself and, having completed a stint, deny himself nothing that will not prejudice the next.

Talk about what you have written, by all means, but do not read from it while the work is in progress. Every gratification procured in this way will slacken your tempo. If this regime is followed, the growing desire to communicate will become in the end a motor for completion.

In your working conditions avoid everyday mediocrity. Semi-relaxation, to a background of insipid sounds, is degrading. On the other hand, accompaniment by an etude or a cacophony of voices can become as significant for work as the perceptible silence of the night. If the latter sharpens the inner ear, the former acts as a touchstone for a diction ample enough to bury even the most wayward sounds.

Avoid haphazard writing materials. A pedantic adherence to certain papers, pens, inks is beneficial. No luxury, but an abundance of these utensils is indispensable.

Let no thought pass incognito, and keep your notebook as strictly as the authorities keep their register of aliens.

Keep your pen aloof from inspiration, which it will then attract with magnetic power. The more circumspectly you delay writing down an idea, the more maturely developed it will be on surrendering itself. Speech conquers thought, but writing commands it.

Never stop writing because you have run out of ideas. Literary honour requires that one break off only at an appointed moment (a mealtime, a meeting) or at the end of the work.

Fill the lacunae of inspiration by tidily copying out what is already written. Intuition will awaken in the process.

Nulla dies sine linea (‘No day without a line’) — but there may well be weeks.

Consider no work perfect over which you have not once sat from evening to broad daylight.

Do not write the conclusion of a work in your familiar study. You would not find the necessary courage there.

Stages of composition: idea — style — writing. The value of the fair copy is that in producing it you confine attention to calligraphy. The idea kills inspiration, style fetters the idea, writing pays off style.

The work is the death mask of its conception.

Reality is visceral, concrete experience. Motion and action. Sensation and meaning. The universe.

Oddly, we mortals experience reality mostly as thought. As I’ve noted elsewhere:

Thought is a reaction to stimuli in the world: a fragrance, an overheard sentence, a prolonged glimpse at the app you are presently doom scrolling (because you are what you read). This reaction, a thought, can trigger a cascade of more thoughts. The mind is a noisy place.
– You are not your thoughts, September 2023

But thoughts are not reality, and neither is meta. Meta is everything we say about reality. It’s abstract. Thoughts about thoughts. Academia. Philosophy. Religion. Gossip. The todo list on your fridge. The thickening sludge formerly known as Twitter.

Here’s the prompt: Limit your ratio of meta to reality. It’s challenging because meta grows while reality just is. It takes vigilance to contain meta. Reality requires no such tending, because it is untendable.

Let’s say 20% just to be safe

Don’t get me wrong, meta can be useful, but it’s hardly mandatory. Orangutans swing without storytelling, and ospreys fly without physics. Meta is here to help mere mortals do a little more. But none of it is required.

Meta is intriguing, but the map is not the territory. That love song isn’t itself love; every diagnosis is words, not the disease. Meta beguiles you with the illusion that you might control reality. But you do not, and you never will.

Meta can be fun, but it’s expensive. Your clicky obsession with saccarine non-reality steals time from the bitter kale of reality. Where meaning happens. And since your days are numbered, I would advise against getting that pHD or that VR headset.

Don’t waste too much time on meta. It is a virus, and you are its host.

When you carry, create, or consume too much meta, you leave less room for its target: the mysterious, continuously unfolding chaos that surrounds you. That is you. Use meta if you must, but learn to move, and live, and be without it.

Reality is numinous and boundless. It is dark matter impenetrable by any scribe. And it’s infinitely more rewarding than anything taped to your fridge.
V Srihttps://www.microprinciples.comAnalyzing the SF Endorsements (aka Social Media Is Still pretty Awesome)https://docpop.org/?p=100892024-03-04T21:20:45+00:00

Over on Mastodon, I shared a link to SFendorsements.com, a non-partisan site that aggregates all of the endorsements for the March, 2024 San Francisco local, state, and national elections in one place. I brought up the fact that despite having names like “labor” or “democratic,” many of these groups tended to support conservative ideals. Of course, thats because many of these so-called democratic groups are actually astroturfing campaigns funded by billionaires.

After I shared the post, a user named @Xek wrote a Python script to make it easier to see which groups lined up the most with the SF Republican party. You can see Xek’s posts here:

The next day, Patrick Cherry shared a different set of visualizations to help show which groups most closely line up with the SF Republican endorsements. Patrick said that Xek’s post served as inspiration for his charts, but “instead of using correlations, I wanted to try out some hierarchical clustering.” That list, and the code he wrote to make it, can be found here https://pdcherry.github.io/posts/2024_03_02-SF_political_support_data.html#nominal-clustering

It all started with a link to a website, then some folks took the ball and ran with it. I love Mastodon!

BTW, I really like the SF Bay Guardian’s endorsement list this year. It’s well written, easy to use, and lines up with the DCCC and Labor & Working Families slate.

Reid's sister, Cassandra Jenkins, who has also become a dear friend, was an essential part of the day. She arranged the piano, violin, and choral sections; and rewrote the lyrics to be about us and the day. Thanks to her, I will never forget that "snow [was] falling in the park" on our perfect day.

Peter picked this song, as it's been a special one for us for a while. Our favorite days the past couple of years have been our slowest, simplest days, which this song perfectly expresses. We were also tickled by the fact the song is wrongly perceived to be about heroin, which honors how our simplest days could feel as euphoric as a drug-high.

When asked if Perfect Day was about heroin addiction, Lou Reed had this to say in 2000:

No. You’re talking to the writer, the person who wrote it. No that’s not true [that the song is about heroin use]. I don’t object to that, particularly whatever you think is perfect. But this guy’s vision of a perfect day was the girl, sangria in the park, and then you go home; a perfect day, real simple. I meant just what I said.

In 2024, this song figures meaningfully in Wim Wenders' newest film: Perfect Days. And last August, Al Green released a cover of the song, his first release in 5 years, which is beautiful in different ways, honoring the song's feelings of contentment and wistfulness in a nuanced rendition.

It would have been Lou Reed's 82nd birthday yesterday, and the more I learn about him, the more I admire him. I've never known much about him or the Velvet Underground, so I'm going to start in the coming weeks with:

Ezra Furman's 33 1/3 book on the album Transformer

Todd Haynes' recent Velvet Underground documentary

any other suggestions?

Be sure to take turns.
Someone has to take noteshttps://vsri.xyzCars Behaving Badly At 23rd and Valenciahttps://docpop.org/?p=100782024-02-26T04:06:56+00:00

One morning, I decided to bring my camera to the intersection of 23rd and Valencia to film one of the most dangerous intersections in the Mission District. A lot of attention has been paid to this part of Valencia Street because of the mobility lane that was recently added for cyclists and micro-mobility riders (e-bikes, small scooters, one-wheelers, electric skateboards, etc). This lane has made the rest of Valencia so much safer, but this section always sucks to cross as a pedestrian or cyclist.

It turns out, the problem on Valencia Street is due to drivers, not bike lanes. Riding in the Mission sure has gotten worse since doordashers and Uber drivers became so common, but looking at all the reckless drivers here, I don’t think we can blame one specific group for why this street is so dangerous right now. .

The new mobility lane is a huge improvement, but I hope the SFMTA opens Valencia Street to pedestrians sometime soon. There were several times in the past few years that Valencia was open, and it was great for the community and local shops. There are plenty of other San Francisco streets for drivers misbehave on.

On a sidenote; I posted this video on r/SanFrancisco and on youtube and the comments and replies have been shockingly sensitive. Drivers are saying they didn’t realize how dangerous these streets are right now and the youtube page has a 95% upvote ratio (with 2,000 views so far).

I recently bumped into Amos Goldbaum in our neighborhood, and I shot this short interview with him. Amos is a “drawer of lines” whose murals can be found all over San Francisco. I asked him how he developed his style, how he researches his murals, and other aspects of his work. You can watch the interview on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVstATACICE

I’ve been a fan of Amos’s work for a while, and it was great to finally get to chat with him about it. This interview was recorded rather spontaneously on my iPhone and edited in Descript. Progress on the mural has halted in the past few days due to the extreme rain in SF, but I’m sure he’ll finish it sometime next week. I can’t wait to see it and I feel so lucky to have a chance to document it’s progress.

I went to see a movie recently called Großstadtschmetterling (Pavement Butterfly) starring Anna May Wong. I had never seen her in a movie before, and only really ever knew of her because of the frequent mentions of her during AAPI Month (May). The screening was introduced by Yunte Huang, an author who published a biography of Anna May this year, Daughter of the Dragon. Huang called our attention to the fact that Anna May was born in the Year of the Dragon (1905).

Some scenes from Pavement Butterfly:

For me, seeing a Chinese face lovingly filmed and presented, in a story that ends up empowering a victimized, racialized other, was a revelatory experience. Especially seeing a Chinese face from such an early cinema period, when I'm used to only seeing white faces in repertory theaters.

---
As I ended up learning from Huang's book, Anna May Wong was an early film star who faced the intersecting marginalization of being both a woman, as well as a Chinese person. Many of the AAPI wins we've celebrated in recent years from Crazy Rich Asians to Everything Everywhere All at Once to Beef were paths previously laid by Wong in the earliest years of cinema, even if they had gone relatively untrodden in the years since Wong died in 1961.
The book ended up being a fascinating survey of Chinese-American history, in an era that I knew little about (1900-1960), specifically tracking the role of Chinese-Americans in US film history. I learned about why America's first Chinese dominated the laundry business, how executives cast Anna May Wong in the first Technicolor movie in order to test skin color differences on colorized film, that Bruce Lee was a quarter white. How mainstream adoration means little when the objects of curiosity are still heavily discriminated against (see highlighted section below), and how this painfully came up time and time again in Anna May Wong's life story.
Here's a New Yorker review of Yunte Huang's book Daughter of the Dragon if you're curious to learn more: https://www.newyorker.com/books/under-review/how-anna-may-wong-became-the-first-chinese-american-movie-star.

Sophomore year of college, I became close with a group of boys. I had just gone through my first breakup, and was feeling desperately lonely, unloved, and seriously unhappy. This group adopted me and often made it their weekend mission: Operation Cheer Claire Up. In a sea of dehumanizing frat boy behavior, these boys loved me as friends, protected me fiercely, and were always there to wipe my tears. In a sea of teenage righteousness and Ivy League social pressure, these boys never made me feel judged for even a moment and made sure I knew I belonged.

One of these boys was Ian. It was immediately obvious that he was reserved, tidy, and kind, but once he let you in a little, you’d gain access to his vast intellect and quick wit.

Since he was more reserved, I lived to make him laugh or to surprise him out of his stoicism. Whenever I’d barge into his room, I’d start singing:

Why do birds suddenly appear
Every time you are near?

This, without fail, warranted a chuckle and a warm hug from Ian.

After we graduated, Ian moved back to Florida and we weren’t as close, but stayed in touch with the same friend group. He had my loyalty and love for life, but we stopped talking regularly.

This past Wednesday, Ben, my introduction to this group and one of my closest friends, called to let me know Ian passed away. I was in a state of shock for the night and well into Thursday.

While I was processing the news, I looked through our last texts. One of our last conversations consisted of Ian double and triple-checking that I’d make it out for drinks when he was coming to town several years ago. Of course I was coming, Ian! But he always made an effort to let me see how wanted, welcomed, and deserving of happiness I am.

I wasn’t sure what to do with my grief, so my friend Mahima prompted me for photos of Ian, which I hadn’t thought of looking through. She also reminded me of some pictures from a party we threw in college. I clicked through the now-hidden Facebook album and found this:

What I love about this picture is that its focal point is Ian’s eyes—among the most kind, piercing, loving, gentle eyes I’ve ever known. I also love how, in the rest of the album, everyone is hamming it up, posing for camera; but of course Ian is locked in deep conversation with someone, blissfully unaware. Our friend Ben is also reflected somehow in the lens, in the shadow behind Ian’s head. Smiling broadly.

—————————

Though obvious, it needs stating: it is incredibly painful watching your friends cry. But joining in, clinging desperately to each other, helps with some measure of healing.

This group of friends has been scattered across the US: from Oakland to Chicago to LA to NYC and lastly, Ian in Miami. All the last times I had seen this group had been birthdays and weddings. Gathering for a memorial was an incredibly confusing experience of joy at seeing each other followed by intense despair at our shared loss.

Ben had a baby 2 months ago, a beautiful boy named Jules. Any time the pain of Ian’s loss was too heavy, we could look at the curious, smiling baby and feel some measure of uplift. Baby Jules was a gift during a despairing moment that reminded us how to celebrate life:

Tell someone you love them today, and squeeze a little harder on your next hug. And then keep doing those things.

—————————

I can’t believe you’re gone, Ian. I miss and love you, and I hope you know how you lifted me up when I was going through one of my hardest times. You were a brilliant person, and the kindest soul. Your memorial was packed to the gills, spilling out the entrance of the funeral home. When we heard from your childhood friends, your lifelong best friend, your work colleagues, your sisters, it was remarkable how many people experienced you as an uncommonly thoughtful, funny, authentic, kind person. Which is exactly how I experienced you. I hope you are at peace, and are having a wonderful time in heaven with Jim Croce and Karen Carpenter ❤️
